I think that the common sense definition of religion would exclude idiosyncratic claims of individuals as well as groups known as “cults.” That is, religion can’t be a matter of simply one person’s claim, whether that be an individual acting alone.
What I think dictates overall intelligence is the ability to balance the common sense and "book smarts" to a point where decisions and thought processes are made based on an overall best effort given the most obtainable knowledge possible.
